Tenement Virtual Museum Tour

Open a Word Document and save it in your main directory as Immigrant Screenshots. You will paste all your screenshots in this one document. To make a screenshot, display the picture you want on your computer screen. Press the Print Screen key (above the Insert button on your keyboard), open the Word Document and Paste.

Go through the site Tenement Immigration Museum. Take screenshots of the following as you go:

  • Your passport
  • Your ticket
  • Your Health inspection card
  • Your postcard to Victoria

Being careful of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, write a blog post including the following information. Be sure to have three-four sentences in each paragraph.

Paragraph 1: The year is 1916. You want to head to America with the hope of having a better life. You choose whether you are male or female, what country you want to come from (choices are Austria-Hungary, Russia, or Italy). You will have four choices for a first name and four choices for a last name. What country and name did you choose and why?

Paragraph 2: You will pick three things to pack in your trunk to take to America. You have nine choices, but can only take three! Your choices are clothes, shoes, family photo, food, cooking pot, religious item, books, bedding, and a toy. What are your three items and why?

Paragraph 3: What did you have to do to get through Ellis Island?

Paragraph 4: What did you choose for a job? Your choices were a “newsie” selling papers, working in a clothing factory, bringing work into the home such as sewing, or being a student. Why?

Paragraph 5: What did you choose to do for fun? Your choices are going to the Nickelodeon, listening to the Victrola, going to Coney Island, or playing stickball in the street. Why?

Paragraph 6: How did you choose to help out at home? Your choices are washing clothes, bringing the coal up from the basement, keeping the apartment clean, or cooking. Why?

Paragraph 7: What will you buy for your apartment? Your choices are chairs (which can be pushed together and double as a bed), a stove, a Victrola, or a bed. Why did you make that choice?
